Umberto Boccioni (1882-1916)

Key works by two outstanding painters dominated this auction, but the decorative arts also made a fine showing.

Four works by Félix del Marle recall an avant-garde style—Futurism—and the early 20th century, a period of progress.

In 1963, this graphic designer founded the Franco Maria Ricci publishing house, and, in 1982, the magazine FMR, which merged with the group Art'é. He collaborated with Jorge Luis Borges, André Chastel and Umberto Eco. His collection of 500 works (17th/20th centuries) and his library are kept in the Masone labyrinth.

This autumn, Palazzo Strozzi in Florence will present a major retrospective of Natalia Goncharova. Its work will be presented alongside masterpieces by the celebrated artists who served her either as inspiration or as direct interlocutors, such as Gauguin, Matisse, Picasso, Balla and Boccioni, says the press release. 

Six new works by Boccioni, Severini, Sironi, Balla, de Chirico and Savinio have been added to the Milanese institution. The donation from the collector Giuseppina Antognini, widow of the entrepreneur Francesco Pasquinelli (1922-2011), was complemented by a contribution of €5 M for the extension of the museum.

The Milanese museum has won the battle to secure the Mattioli collection. Valued at €143 million, it features works by artists including Boccioni, Balla, Carrà, Morandi and Modigliani. Joining the Novacento’s existing body of 35 Futurist works, it has been described by experts as an “unrivaled” Futurist collection.

Painted in 1913-1914 in Florence, this piece dates from Alberto Magnelli's early career, when he was not yet committed to abstraction.
