Edward Henry Bickersteth was born in Islington, Greater London, on 25 January 1825. He was the son of Edward Bickersteth and Sarah Bignold.
He was an honor graduate of Trinity College, Cambridge. He served as vicar of Christ Church, Hampstead; Dean of Gloucester; and Bishop of Exeter (1885–1900).
