SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 674,741, dated May 21, 1901.
Application filed September 10, 1900. Serial No. 29,592. (No model.)
T0 at whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN R. PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cottonwood, in the county of Idaho and State of Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cutlery-Blanks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in blanks for use in the manufacture of cutlery; and its primary object is to provide a device of this character whereby a spoon or other article may be constructed with means for preventing the same from slipping into pots, kettles, &c. after the same has been used for stirring and other purposes.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter more fullydescribed and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective view of a spoon constructed from a blank forming the subjectmatter of my invention.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference, 1 is the bowl of a spoon, having a handle 2, which is of any desired form and material. This handle is broadened at a point between its ends, as at 3, forming a shoulder 4. (Shown in dotted lines.) A slit is then cut into each of the shoulders on a line with the edges of the upper portion of the handle, and the tongues 5, formed thereby, are bent downward, forming hooks, as shown. It will be seen that by providing a device of this construction hooks may be formed thereon without weakening the handle in anyway, and the hooks by being placed at opposite sides thereof do not interfere with the perfect nesting of the spoons when the same are packed for shipping, lac.
It will be seen that by means of the hooks the spoon may be suspended from the edge of a pot or kettle after having been used for stirring the contents thereof.
In the foregoing description I have embodied the preferred form of myinvention, though I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention, and I therefore reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope thereof and to apply the same device to other forms of cutlery besides spoons, if desired, to accomplish the same purpose.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, a blank for an article of cutlery formed in a single piece of metal and having a handle portion, lateral extensions upon opposite sides of the handle and at points between the ends thereof, and a tongue projecting from each extension and formed by slitting the handle longitudinally, said tongues being adapted'to be bent inward upon the extensions, thereby forming hooks.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN R. PATTERSON.
