.Be it known that I, (luenen R. Mancn'rrs, a .citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, Cook county, Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spoons,` ofwhich `the following is a specif'b cation. .l-

yThe lpresent invention has to do with im provements in spoons, and has particular reference to improvementsin what I` shall term medical spoons. While as a matter of convenience. in` designation` or description, the spoon of the present invention may he described* as-a medical spoon, still it will be understood that by such description, I do not in any way limit the field of usefulness or application of the invention to other different classes of service.

A medical spoon should be so constructed as to be sanitary and cleanly to the highest possible degree, and for these purposes, it is desirable that the spoon should be so constructed that its bowl will not at any time in its ordinary use come into contact with the table or other article of furniture on which the spoon may rest.

One of the objects of the invention is to so construct the spoon as to accomplish this result. As a matter of convenience, a medical spoon should be so constructed that it will stand upright on the table or other article of furniture, so that it will carry medicine and the like without spilling. Another object of the invention is to so construct the spoon that this result will he accomplished.

Still another object of the invention is to so weight or balance the spoon that it will have a tendency at all times to right itself or restore itself to the upright or standing position. This will insure that the howl of the spoon will only come into contact with a table or other article of furniture momentarily in case the spoon should be dropped or thrown onto the supporting surface.

Other objects and uses of the invention *will appear from a detailed description of the same which consists in the features of construction and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The spoon of my` invention` includes. a bowl 4L and a handle 5. These portionsiare ordinarily made as an integral or. unitary piece, and manifestly the` Lspoon may be cast,l or it may be stamped out, `or dropforged, or made in any other suitable manner.

The handle 5 comprises a rearwardly7 extending relatively narrow neck or tong por tion C, the rear end of Vwhich is` turned down and connected to the forwardly extending base or supportingl portion 7. This portion 7 has yits forward end S terminating at a position approximately under the lower po1 tion of the bowl so as to give ample support for the bowl.

Examination of Figs. l and 3 shows that the base portion 7 is of substantial width. Fig. 2 also shows this portion of substantial thickness as compared to the remaining portions of the spoon. On account of these facts, the spoon is practically sclf-rightingthat is, the center of gravity of the entire article is brought so low down that the spoon will right itself from almost any position which it may find on striking a table or floor.

Fig. l shows that both the front and rear ends of the base portion 7 are of substantially the full width of such base portion, and, therefore, afford a maximum degree of self-righting tendency with a minimum weight of the base portion.

Figs. 2 and 3 also reveal the fact that the bowl is at all times supported entirely clear of the upper surface 9 of a table or other article on which the spoon is supported. Fig. 2 also shows that the central part of the base portion 10 is bowed up slightly, so that the points of contact are at the front and rear ends of said base portion.
