Nokia has its own design capabilities but doesn’t own silicon manufacturing facilities, so it turns to partners such as Intel. It uses a processor core from Intel, who also work with Nokia to implement it. For Nokia’s system on a chip (SoC) work, it collaborates with Intel first for the FPGA intermediate solutions, then the dedicated high-powered processors and specific silicon processes for the commercial SoCs. The requirements for silicon design change as products evolve from 4G into 5G, with factors such as data throughput and power consumption affecting the design, so Nokia needs to use the very latest silicon technologies for the new Nokia ReefShark chipsets that power its 5G network solutions.
