Police have and reinforced security nationwide, with increased patrols and more surveillance, in case more people were involved. People were allowed to return to the city centre a few hours later.

Two people have reportedly been killed and six injured.

Shocking images of a body lying in the middle of the street in central Turku covered with a white sheet, with several other bloodied victims treated at the scene, have emerged.

One witness said a woman was stabbed while pushing her one-year-old baby in a pram. He described her as lying “immobile” in the street after the incident.

Several of the injured are believed to be foreign visitors to the city, located around 100 miles west of the Finnish capital of Helsinki. No children were among those hurt.

Authorities have not ruled out terror as a motive for the attack.
