How Newcastle United lost talented wonder kid Luis Longstaff to Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp

The winger has been impressing at Anfield with Jurgen Klopp calling Darlington-born star to train with the first team

Lee Ryder - Is Joelinton a true number 9?

Newcastle United's loss of teenager Luis Longstaff could be about to hit home with the exciting winger getting closer to his first team debut at Liverpool.

The Darlington-born player was at Newcastle's Academy from the age of nine but left the club in 2015 when the Reds made an approach to take him to Anfield.

Since then he has impressed in the Under-23s with Liverpool and has even been drafted into first team training with Jurgen Klopp's senior side.

Longstaff - who is no relation to Sean or Matty - was on the bench for Liverpool's League Cup encounter against MK Dons last week.

His rise to prominence with Liverpool is another blow to United's Academy after Lewis Gibson quit Newcastle to join Everton in 2018.

The 18-year-old's talent has been compared to German ace Mesut Özil and can play on the right, on the left and through the middle.

The youngster is playing for Neil Critchley's U23s at Liverpool and has made an excellent start to the season in the second string by scoring two goals in four matches in Premier League 2.

Toon head coach Steve Bruce is trying to make improvements at the club's Academy to prevent this type of situation happening again.

When asked his views on Peter Beardsley, Alan Shearer and even himself slipping through the net, he said earlier this season: "I think we all did! It’s do difficult now.

"Even Man U are losing them to Bayern Munich and Benifca and AC Milan.

"Something has to change to make sure you hold onto them."
