Texas forever! Friday Night Lights stars Kyle Chandler, Connie Britton reunite at Golden Globes
Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler just treated fans to a clear-eyed, full-hearted Friday Night Lights reunion.
The former costars, who played husband and wife across five seasons of the NBC (and later DirecTV) sports drama between 2006 and 2011, re-teamed Sunday night to pose for a photo at the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes after-party.
Chandler and Britton led the Peter Berg-developed program as Eric and Tami Taylor, a high school football coach and his guidance counselor wife who balance their personal and professional lives while raising a daughter (Aimee Teegarden) in small-town Texas. The show also chronicled the lives of various students at the couple’s high school — particularly players on Eric’s team (Scott Porter, Zach Gilford, Gaius Charles, Taylor Kitsch) and their various romantic interests (Minka Kelly, Adrianne Palicki).
Inspired by H.G. Bissinger’s 1990 novel of the same name (previously adapted by Berg as a 2004 feature film starring Billy Bob Thornton), Friday Night Lights ran for two seasons on NBC before the network struck a deal with DirecTV to co-produce three seasons’ worth of additional episodes, which aired on the 101 Network (now known as the Audience Network) before the series ended on 2011.
Since the show’s cancellation, several reports have indicated that Berg was considering a new Friday Night Lights film, though plans never came to fruition. Britton later told Andy Cohen she wasn’t optimistic about the series’ story continuing with her involved.
“Guys, I just don’t think it’s gonna happen,” she said during an interview on Watch What Happens Live. “I think that the consensus is that they just want to let it lie. I’ve come full circle, because I was all for it in the beginning. I think if we had done it early on, but now I really do see how special it is to be able to end a series in that way. It was so beautifully-done and so beautifully-arced that yeah, I think we kind of did it.”
In May 2018, Halloween helmer David Gordon Green was reportedly in talks to helm a reimagined version of the story, but nothing has materialized on that front, either.
Elsewhere at the InStyle party, Britton also reunited with her American Horror Story costar Dylan McDermott for a quick video shoot inside the publication’s annual Golden Globes elevator booth, where they playfully threw popcorn into each other’s mouths.
