Description

"The Great Debaters" is a 2007 drama film directed by and starring Denzel Washington, based on the true story of the Wiley College debate team, an all-black team that challenged Harvard University's debate team in the 1930s. The film takes place in rural Texas during the Great Depression and focuses on the struggles and triumphs of the team and their coach, Melvin B. Tolson (played by Denzel Washington). The story centers around the team's journey to the national debate championship, and the obstacles they face along the way, including racism and discrimination. As they prepare for the big competition, the team members learn valuable lessons about themselves and the power of words, ultimately triumphing over their opponents in a historic debate.

The film explores themes of racial inequality, social justice, and the transformative power of education.
