(SPOT.ph) In December, we saw Intramuros all lit up for Christmas—adding to the list of reasons why everyone (especially photographers) should hang out in the Walled City and appreciate the Spanish-era fortress in all its glory. Well, it looks like the bright lights are not going down anytime soon as Fort Santiago is extending its closing hours to 11 p.m. starting on January 13. Original operating hours used to be from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. only.
Fort Santiago, which was built in 1593, was one of the Spaniards' main defense lines in Intramuros. It was where several prisoners were held during the Spanish colonization and World War II, including Jose Rizal before his execution in 1896.
These days, Fort Santiago is a must-visit tourist destination that's rich in history. It features a moat and arched gate that lead to well-kept gardens and fountains. Inside, you can trace the final steps of Rizal from his cell through bronze footprints embedded onto the ground. At night, you can chill out on the benches under brightly lit lampposts.
Fort Santiago is at Sta. Clara Street corner G. Luna Street, Intramuros, Manila. It is open daily from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. starting on January 13. Admission fee is at P75 for adults and P50 for children and students. For more information, follow Intramuros Administration on Facebook.
