(SPOT.ph) Local history buffs have a new material to fawn over: The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) is now selling Noli Me Tangere facsimiles—i.e. exact copies—for everyone who wants the story behind the story.

The facsimile of Noli Me Tangere is a faithful reproduction of Dr. Jose Rizal's own handwriting, including corrections and deletions he made in the original manuscript before he submitted it to the Berliner Buchdruckerei Aktiengesellschaft in March 1887. Since it is the original, expect the text to be in Spanish.

Each copy is priced at P2,450 at the NHCP's Online Bookstore. There are only 250 copies on hand but NHCP told SPOT.ph that additional orders can be placed, for re-printing in case of increased demand. You can call (02) 5335-1209 or email property@nhcp.gov.ph for more information.

Where is the original manuscript of Noli Me Tangere?

The original manuscript of Noli Me Tangere is currently housed at the National Library of the Philippines (NLP), along with El Filibusterismo and other important materials, in the institution's “Rare Books and Manuscripts” exhibit. This exhibition is open to the public, allowing visitors an up-close view of the original works.

The succeeding English and Filipino translations of Noli Me Tangere are based on the facsimile editions of the manuscripts. The translations aim to restore significant sections of the original text in order to stay true to Rizal's work.
