Pay to work? Latin America delivery giant Rappi is now charging its drivers a weekly fee. The move is part of a bigger shift away from the fundraising model among gig work platforms, and companies are feeling the pressure to turn a profit. “Food and goods delivery digital platform work is already some of the most precarious, underpaid employment in Brazil,” Gonzalo Martinez de Vedia, Brazil program director at labor rights organization Solidarity Center, told Rest of World. “Any new fee that subtracts from wages in that equation throws the sector further into substandard conditions.” Johnny William Cruz Borges, director of social impact at the competitor app iFood, told Rest of World the company has no plans to introduce a similar fee. “For us, delivery drivers are platform workers, and as workers, nobody pays to work,” he said. DoorDash has updated its equity vesting philosophy for 2024 resulting in significantly lower overall stock packages. We're hearing about nearly ~60% of share value they would offer just a few months ago. For example, $350k equity packages now that would have been $500k eight to ten weeks ago. A user from our community suggests: "Honestly I sort of like it. It's a focus on efficiency, which companies should have been doing all along. For year 1 $500k * 0.25 = $125k $350k * 0.40 = $140k Nobody is going to just sit there and take a pay cut after their first year of work. The goal is clearly to get refreshed or have the employee volunteer drop. You can even take it out to the second year and be about where you would have been with the evenly split vest." DoorDash tried doing a noble thing by urging frugal users to tip. They caught some heat for that, and rightfully so considering how much money they make off the backs of businesses. Like, just pay drivers better, people. What they did next is kind of infuriating. They've instituted a policy that drivers must complete 90% of orders in order to stay active in the app. 40% or so of orders don't tip, so they're forcing drivers to accept low-paying orders or else they won't get any orders AT ALL. Yikes. Is this a boneheaded move, or what? Drivers who are desperate for cash will end up losing out big time. Or they'll move to other platforms. #doordash #GigEconomy
