Alfred Kubin was an Austrian illustrator, printmaker, and painter who was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is known for his dark, surrealistic, and symbolist works, which often explored themes of death, decay, and the subconscious. One of Kubin's most famous works is Vers l'inconnu (Towards the Unknown), a series of illustrations that he created for a French edition of Edgar Allan Poe's Tales of Mystery and Imagination.

Vers l'inconnu is a collection of 22 illustrations that Kubin created between 1908 and 1910. The images depict a range of disturbing and unsettling themes, including madness, horror, and the occult. Many of the illustrations feature macabre scenes of death and decay, with twisted, gothic imagery that evokes the dark and eerie world of Poe's stories.
