Twisted log cabin - Tradition with a twist

Pieced log cabin block

The traditional log cabin block is an all time favourite of many because it’s a lovely versatile block that has many different sets and variations and always looks good. this month the theme for the Quilt Block Mania Bloghop is “Tradtion with a twist” so I’m making a variation on the log cabin block where the log cabin gets a little twisted, but the piecing is still quite straightforward. This block is interesting when you set it because you get a variety of patterns. I’ve been playing a lot with the same theme and seeing what happens if the centre square is bigger or smaller and set straight or at an angle. I’ve also been playing with whether I want the centre block straight or twisted.

Block Setting Variations

My original plan was to have the centre square of the block nice and straight like this. I played with a few sets, straight, on point or reflected and I liked them.

Log Cabin Twist Variations

The first time I made the block, it ended up like this, because I put the corner triangles on the wrong edges and I liked it. So, i went back and redesigned the block accordingly so I could see what happened when I set it.

More Log Cabin Twist Variations

When I fist started playing with this block, I had a big centre and small logs. I wanted to explore this a bit further because it’s nice to be able to feature a fabric in the centres. this centre fabric has yellow tailed black cockatoos from a fabric by Jocelyn Proust. We get big mobs of them at this time of year feasting on the bottlebrush. i first tried a 9 inch block which I like with pink highlights. Then I remade it with mauves and mustard.

I have so far made four of these blocks and am running out of the mauve fabrics. I’m trying to decide if I want to make more and add those corner triangles or whether I want to make a table runner. I’m also wondering whether a colour way with charcoal black, clear yellow and pink might be interesting. ….

The pattern for the first version of this block is complimentary for the month of September 2021 in my newsletter. I have been leaving them in my pattern store complimentary for the month, but I am trying to be more organised and this will make me actually write a newsletter. The block download link is still to be found at the end of this blog

I’m really excited by the designs from the other designers which look like a lot of fun.
