According to Seymour Slive the present painting is after a now lost original by Frans Hals which was formerly conserved at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Rotterdam. The prototype was one of 300 paintings lost in a disastrous fire on 16 February 1864. Slive furthermore notices how the present composition does not include the book seen in the other versions (see Slive, 1974, pp. 120-121).
The present painting is listed in the RKD database under nos. 0000339368 and 0000339366 (as after Frans Hals (I)).
