Warning: This article contains spoilers for Lost that some readers may prefer to avoid.

Lost seasons 1-6 are available now from Sky on demand. Digital Spy has partnered with Sky to celebrate 10 years of the groundbreaking US series.

In its near-six years on air, Lost introduced 27 major characters - but which island inhabitants captured our hearts, and which deserved to be sucked into Oceanic Flight 815's turbine?

27. Ilana Verdansky (Zuleikha Robinson)

Introduced as a mysterious outsider with a deep connection to Jacob and the island, Ilana turned out to be a bit of a damp squib who (ironically) was abruptly killed by some unstable dynamite.

26. Charlotte Lewis (Rebecca Mader)

Daniel Faraday's wet love interest, Charlotte was eventually offed when her body could no longer take the strain of random time-hops. Faraday was devastated, the audience less so.

25. Nikki (Kiele Sanchez) and Paulo (Rodrigo Santoro)

Just enough personality between them to warrant one entry - Nikki and Paulo were loathed by Lost fans when they suddenly materialised in the third season, but their exit episode (which saw the paralysed pair accidentally buried alive) is a classic.

24. Ana Lucia Cortez (Michelle Rodriguez)

Human, Hand, Gun, Shooting, Forest, Air gun, Jungle, Gun barrel, Shooting sport, Revolver, pinterest
Mario Perez/ABC

Bless the Lost writers - they really tried to make us love Ana Lucia, but the tortured cop never quite caught on with viewers. After appearing in 22 episodes, she - along with poor Libby - was written out of the series.

23. Boone Carlyle (Ian Somerhalder)

Young business mogul Boone sure was pretty - and we loved his mentor/protégé dynamic with Locke - but his death towards the end of the first season meant that this intriguing character never quite reached his potential.

22. Sun-Hwa Kwon (Yunjin Kim)

Sun may have started the series as a meek figure, but her transformation from housewife to empowered hero was one of Lost's most dramatic arcs and her troubled romance with Jin one of its most affecting sub-plots.

21. Shannon Rutherford (Maggie Grace)

Shannon proved herself to be more than a spoilt little rich girl after Oceanic flight 815 - the crash, and an unlikely romance with Sayid, were the making of her and it was genuinely upsetting to see her accidentally felled by one of Ana Lucia's bullets.

20. Claire Littleton (Emilie de Ravin)

ABC/Everett

Sweet-natured Claire had perhaps the toughest ride of any of the survivors - she's abducted by the Others, her budding romance with Charlie cut short by his death and eventually she's forced to eke out a primitive life, alone, on the island. No wonder that sweet nature faded fast.

19. Walt Lloyd (Malcolm David Kelley)

One of Lost's biggest unresolved mysteries was Walt. Early on, Michael's young son was seen exhibiting all manner of paranormal powers, but a growth spurt from child actor Kelley forced writers to arrange a hasty exit for the character, leaving his abilities unexplained.

18. Libby Smith (Cynthia Watros)

ABC

Introduced in season two, Libby was another of Lost's tragic axings. Hurley's gentle courtship of the delightful psychologist was cut short when she became Michael's second victim, after Ana Lucia. And we never did find out why she was in that institution...

17. Sayid Jarrah (Naveen Andrews)

Green, Shirt, Dress shirt, People in nature, Facial hair, Agriculture, Black hair, Grass family, Beard, Field, pinterest
Mario Perez/ABC

The stoic Sayid was one of the show's more enigmatic characters. Even once his backstory was revealed, a return-from-the-grave that defied explanation and his subsequent 'dark' state meant that this ex-soldier remained a mystery to the last.

16. Jack Shephard (Matthew Fox)

Sleeve, Shoulder, Elbow, Hand, Facial hair, Chest, Temple, Muscle, Beard, Wrist, pinterest
Mario Perez/ABC

The series' square-jawed protagonist, deeply-flawed surgeon Jack struggled with his role as leader of the survivors for the longest time, but emerged a hero in the end - saving his friends by engaging the Man in Black in a climactic battle to the death.

15. Michael Dawson (Harold Perrineau)

Bob D'Amico

Often unfairly dismissed as a one-note character ("WAAA-AAAA-LLLLTTT!!"), Michael's story was in fact tragic and compelling. A good man who committed unspeakable acts, he ended up as one voice among the island's countless dead.

14. Jin-Soo Kwon (Daniel Dae Kim)

Hot-tempered and unpleasant at first, viewers soon warmed to Jin as his tough life before the island was explored via flashback. Like many of his fellow survivors, that fateful flight changed Jin forever and he ultimately became one of the series' most compassionate figures.

13. Hugo 'Hurley' Reyes (Jorge Garcia)

The only Lost character to have an album named after them - Hurley, the loveable down-and-out and secret millionaire, quickly became a favourite amongst Lost fans, thanks to his sympathetic nature and Jorge Garcia's immense comic talent.

12. Miles Straume (Ken Leung)

Miles Straume (like 'malestrom', geddit?) was a late arrival to Lost but the maverick medium's devil-may-care nature quickly earned him a legion of fans. We'd still love to see a spinoff with 'Flash Sideways' Sawyer and Miles as buddy cops.

11. Richard Alpert (Nestor Carbonell)

He of the amazing eyelashes - we're still not entirely sure why Richard was immortal, but we loved the Others' inscrutable advisor nevertheless. After originally being hired as a guest spot in the third season, Alpert's popularity with producers and fans saw him appear in a further 28 episodes.

10. Kate Austen (Evangeline Lilly)

Another of the show's tragic figures, fugitive Kate was hounded her whole life, before the Oceanic crash and her time on the island helped her find a family of sorts. Though Lost was always an ensemble series, Evangeline Lilly was very much its female lead and earned a Golden Globe nomination in 2006.

9. Charlie Pace (Dominic Monaghan)

Mario Perez

Faded rock star Charlie overcame his personal demons and a heroin addiction to become a true hero - we still can't read the words 'Not Penny's Boat' without sobbing. Oh, and Driveshaft's 'You All Everybody' was a bit of a tune too.

8. Frank Lapidus (Jeff Fahey)

Leaf, People in nature, Khaki, Trunk, Camouflage, Cargo pants, Vineyard, Agriculture, Grapevine family, Beard, pinterest
Mario Perez

"Walt and Widmore used to be important - LAPIDUS!!" One of the more memorable characters to join Lost in the late-going, Lapidus became a series regular for the final sixth season (after a recurring role in the fourth and fifth) following a strong response to the laconic pilot and became the key to escaping the island - both times.

7. Juliet Burke (Elizabeth Mitchell)

Mario Perez/ABC

Originally (unwillingly) one of the Others, physician Juliet soon joined with the core group, with her and Sawyer establishing a romance following a three-year time jump. The pair were reunited in the Lost series finale, for which Mitchell received an Emmy nomination for Best Actress.

6. Mr Eko (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje)

People, Adaptation, Human, Jungle, Tree, Tribe, Grass, Plant, Photography, Soil, pinterest
Mario Perez/ABC//Getty Images

A guerrilla drug lord turned man of God, Eko was one of Lost's most complex characters - a pity that Akinnuoye-Agbaje asked to be written out of the show after a single season, cutting short the character's arc.

5. Daniel Faraday (Jeremy Davies)

Nose, Mouth, Facial hair, Hairstyle, Sleeve, Forehead, Collar, Jacket, Beard, Moustache, pinterest
Mario Perez/ABC

Oh Faraday, we hardly knew ye - a mere 20 episodes was not enough of this sensitive science nerd, who immediately endeared himself to audiences with his awkward manner and fierce intelligence. At least Daniel got to be happy in the afterlife.

4. Ben Linus (Michael Emerson)

Mario Perez

From the moment he made his debut as 'Henry Gale', Michael Emerson had us bewitched with a truly sensational performance. Was Ben a villain? An anti-hero? Either way, we loved the twitchy, tragic leader of the Others.

3. John Locke (Terry O'Quinn)

Mario Perez/ABC

A man of faith, opposed to Jack's man of science, the strong-willed, spiritual Locke was absolutely fascinating - a former paraplegic reborn on the island, he was - more than any other - tied to its strange, inexplicable power. Terry O'Quinn quite rightly won an Emmy in 2007 for what remains a standout performance.

2. Desmond Hume (Henry Ian Cusick)

Mario Perez/ABC

"Ah luv yoo, Penn-eh!" Originally a minor part, the romantic Desmond went on to become a Lost regular and one of the show's most beloved characters. Cusick was nominated for an Emmy in 2006 and Hume-centric episode 'The Constant' is widely considered the series' pinnacle.

1. James 'Sawyer' Ford (Josh Holloway)

Mouth, Facial hair, Branch, Sleeve, Trousers, Human body, Dress shirt, Shirt, Denim, Jeans, pinterest
ABC Inc/Everett

The obvious choice? Perhaps - but only because it's the right one. Sawyer was dark, complex and hugely charismatic with a fascinating backstory - a handsome conman who transforms from snarky outsider to anti-hero to just plain hero. His 'breakout character' status is testament to his position as the greatest Lost creation.
