    Current Model
Audi's flagship features a smooth, powerful turbo V6 and a slick eight-speed automatic. Together, they returned 21 mpg overall in our tests, which is impressive for a large all-wheel-drive sedan.
A high-performance S8 comes with a turbo V8 engine. The infotainment system looks complex at first, but we found it to be logical to use. The lack of physical controls is not ideal, but we like how the touchscreen vibrates to confirm each selection for any audio or climate task. The A8's ride is very comfortable, and handling is responsive but not agile. The cabin is quiet and impeccably furnished. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, ?and they have a multitude of available adjustments, while the rear seat has limolike room. BSW and RCTW are optional, a serious oversight for a car in this price range.

    2019-2023
    2019 Redesign Year
Audi's redesigned top-level sedan features a smooth, powerful turbocharged V6 engine that returned 21 mpg overall in our tests, which is impressive for a large AWD sedan. Audi's new infotainment system looks complex at first, but over time we found it both logical and intuitive to use.
We like how the touch screen vibrates to confirm each selection for any audio or climate task. The A8's ride is supremely comfortable, and handling is responsive. The cabin is quiet and impeccably furnished. The front seats are comfortable, supportive, and have a multitude of available adjustments, while the rear seat has limo-like room. Forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking are standard.  For 2020 lane departure warning and lane keeping assistance are standard on all trim lines. A plug-in hybrid version that can go 17 miles on electric power and a S8 high-performance version are new.

    2011-2018
    2011 Redesign Year
For 2011, Audi brought a significantly improved car. Handling became crisp and grip from the AWD system helped make it one of the sportiest luxury sedans available.
Expect a ride that's firm, yet supple. The strong engines deliver smooth and effortless acceleration while attaining commendable fuel economy. Interior ambiance, quality of materials and craftsmanship are top-notch, with exceptionally comfortable and supportive front seats. However, some controls are overly complicated and the trunk is small for a car this size. Note: The Environmental Protection Agency says Volkswagen installed "defeat devices" in 3.0-liter V6 diesel engines offered through Audi, Porsche, and VW brands in order to cheat on emissions tests. (VW denies this.) Consequently,Consumer Reportsis suspending our recommendation of affected models with this diesel powertrain because there's a chance that the fuel economy, performance, and driving characteristics could change from any action to bring these models in line with emissions standards. For the latest information, see our guide to the Volkswagen emissions recall.

    2004 Redesign Year
Audi's aluminum flagship has always been comfortable, capable, and replete with the latest safety gear. It's also quick and extremely quiet, with a roomy and impressively finished cabin.
Handling is fairly nimble. The Multi Media Interface (MMI) multifunction control system is more intuitive than most of its ilk, but still complicated and distracting. Despite its lightweight aluminum unibody, our tested A8 returned an unimpressive 17 mpg overall. The 2004 redesign brought a six-speed automatic transmission and a 4.2-liter V8 engine. The A8 has also hosted V12 and V10 engines.

Audi's flagship sedan competes among the world's largest and most luxurious sedans, and is the only car in its class to offer standard all-wheel drive. Notable features include an aluminum body and a burly 4.2-liter V8.
A five-speed automatic transmission and stability control are standard. The A8 has a total of eight air bags--one in each of the doors, as well as side-curtain head-protection bags. But so-so ride comfort and control placement show this model's age. The longer-wheelbase A8L features a roomier rear seat. A higher-performance 360-hp S8 model is the latest edition. A GPS navigation system comes standard.
