Alfred Leopold Isidor Kubin (Leitmeritz, 1877 - Zwickledt, 1959)

The Austrian illustrator, lithographer, painter, and writer Alfred Kubin was a member of Expressionism and Symbolism, who portrayed scenes from real life experiences through metaphors of the oneiric world. He drew much inspiration from artists like Max Klinger, Goya, de Groux, Rops, Munch, Ensor, and Redon. He became friends with Paul Klee and Hans von Weber, a German publisher and patron of the arts, considered the talent scout of Kubin.

Kubin produced a small number of oil paintings in the period between 1902 and 1910, then he devoted himself to watercolors, ink drawings, and lithographs. In 1912, in Munich, he became a member of the Blaue Reiter group, making friends with artists such as Kandinsky, Gabriele Münter, August Macke, Marianne von Werefkin, Alexander Jawlenski, and Paul Klee. He illustrated works by Edgar Allan Poe, E.T. A. Hoffmann, Fyodor Dostoevsky, among others. Kubin was awarded the Great Austrian State Prize in 1951 and the Austrian Decoration for Science and Art in 1957.
