Interviewing Practitioners.

A part of my Professional Practice Assignment, is to interview one or more practitioners, they must have different job roles and ideally work in contrasting areas.

I initially decided to look at current artist’s/photographers that I am familiar with, and who inspire me.

I come from a very art based background, and have constantly involved myself with everything art based, from painting, to graphics, to stitch and photography. One particular artist/illustrator who really inspires me is Maurizio Anzeri. I love his colour thread reworkings of old, archaic traditional portraits.

Anzeri is an Italian artist who turns vintage photographs into contemporary mixed media artworks. Using different coloured threads, he traces portraits with stitches and transforms ghost like images into eye catching, intricate designs. Anzeri’s elaborate needlework creates a great juxtaposition in comparison to the eerie, sombre and mysterious backgrounds; in doing this he challenges our attitudes towards the relevance of traditional techniques in contemporary art.

I really love this editorial piece, a collaboration between Maurizio Anzeris and Richard Burbridge. Black and white photographs taken by Burbridge, Anzeris transforms these photographs by stitching and sewing directly onto them using colored threads; giving the shots a whole other magnitude.

I specialised in fashion during my studies at University College Falmouth, during my Foundation Diploma in Art and Design. Fashion photography is an area in the industry I have always been interested in. But what I admire about Burbridge is his unique twist on whats considered a ‘Fashion’ editorial.

I love both these artists, it would be an honour to interview either of them. I am going to compose a couple emails, and send them out. I will document my progress on my blog.

Watch this Space.
