Photograph of Pastor F. L. Grundtvig. On May of 1895, F. L. Grundtvig visited [Danevang]. He brought joy and new hope to the settlers. On May 24th, 1895, he conducted services and served communion in the Mads Andersen home. On this day, the congregation was organized and named Ansgar Evangelisk Lutherske Menighed on February 4th, 1906. The congregation voted to start building a church - a year later - to start January 6, 1907. It was voted all were to give $4.00 per bale for the cotton harvested. Non-famers were assessed a certain amount - depending on their ubcine, Mads Andersen, H. P. Hermansen, and L. P. Larsen were named to be the building committee: Mrs. H. P. Jensen, Mrs. J. C. Evers, Mrs. C. J. Christnesen and Mrs. Hans Nygaard volunteered to be the interior decorating committee. The Danish Ladies Aid offered to give the pulpit, the children of the community offered to give the marble baptismal fountain. Contributions and gifts came from far and near so the people of this settlement were happy about their decision to build. Marentze Andersen Webb.
