TEKDIVEUSA.2020 – The (almost )forgotten wrecks – SS Leopoldville – Lusitania – B24

The Leopoldville

was used as a troop transport ship during World war 2. Christmas eve 1944 it had more than 2000 American soldiers on–board for a crossing to the battlefields in the Belgian Ardennes. Only 5 miles from the French coast it was torpedoed by the U486 .More than 700 young American soldiers died that night in the icy waters of the North sea.

The Lusitania

Despite a warning from the German Ministry that there was a risk that the ship could be torpedoed , it bengan the crossing to England. On the 7 may 1915 it was hit by a torpedo below the waterline.The ship Quickly sank to a depth of 90 meter on the coast of Ireland. By ( often) bad weather,strong winds and big waves it is one of the hardest wrecks to dive.

B24 “The Drip”

After a flight ( 5 nov 1943)  to Munster in Germany the B24 ran into difficulties over Dutch territory. The bomber was attacked by Messersmiths and crashed in the North sea. The wreck was found in 2007.
