SWEET SUE BY AMERICAN CHARACTER

Many people think that “Sweet Sue,” one of American Character’s most popular and long-lasting dolls, was also one of the prettiest dolls ever made. She does have a lovely face.

She was always beautifully presented in a gown, often with gloves, a bag and of course, a big flowery hat.

This is American Character’s Sweet Sue. Approximately 1957 manufacture, but she was made for more than a decade from 1948 until 1961, so it could be earlier or slightly later. She came in two sizes: 14 inches and 20 inches. This lady is the 20 inch model.

She has her original hair. Her gown was made for her. I made the hat. I can’t help myself. I love those flowery hats. Also, any of my dolls who were not stored but stood in rooms on shelves needed to be protected from light. Hats are good protection from sun bleaching.

    • I wanted to buy a hat like this for ME. There was one in black with a while burst of colorful flowers on it. Great big brim, too. I adored it. Garry said I could wear it, but he would have to walk on the other side of the road. I sighed and gave up.

  4. So I ask, where are the Black, Asian, or Native American dolls?

    • They only made a few non-white dolls until the mid 1960s and now, they probably make an equal number of white and “other ethnicity” dolls. American Dolls, the current very expensive (and possibly last maker) of fancy girl dolls make all kinds of dolls from just about any ethnic group you care to mention. BUT, they ARE all girls. The barrier to boy dolls has never really come down. Girls want girl dolls. Boys want trucks, superheros, and fake guns.
