The lino-cuts of Palle NielsensteemCreated with Sketch.

in #art6 years ago (edited)

I have lately been interested in cross-hatching in my drawings, doing all kinds of different stuff, and I got to think of the old Danish master in that field: Palle Nielsen - who was a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Art from 1967 to 1973.

Palle Nielsen exeled in drawings and all kinds of graphic techniques, but the ones I will show here is some of his lino-cuts.

Lino-cut is a technique that is close to wood-cut, but the material is easier to work with as it is softer and has no veins like wood.

The motifs was very often cityscapes with a slight panicky and apocalyptic feel. The Second World War had put its mark on Palle Nielsen's generation and for us young punks in the eighties it was still relevant as the treat from atomic war was also a part of our lives.

Here are some of the solemn and beautiful pieces.

On the website of his gallery (he is dead now, but they are the best gallery for graphic art in Denmark) you can see even more of his works also in other media like drawings, etchings and lithography.

Amazing use of the lino-cut technique. I remember it was one of the hardest labourious techniques I've learned to use in design school. has a very 70's alt-comics vibe.

Very good observation! Palle Nielsen was always working in the fine art department, but his work is very much in line with people like Philippe Caza, Jean Giraud/Moebius and Enki Bilal. There's a kinship to these younger artists that I am not sure he realised himself.

The way he depicts people in the cityscapes is full of melancholy and depression. Excellent use of crosshatching: in the first pic, the different angles in the strokes convey a sense of texture and perspective; the building on the right is amazing. Thanks for mentioning this great artist.

Yes, he did have a way of depicting seemingly everyday situations and still get a sense of loneliness. Glad you like it. I do too.

I’ve tried cross hatching before, it’s really interesting specially with what your able to come up with and different textures your able to make though that is some really good art work you posted, thanks for sharing

Yes, this gut was a master in new variants of black and white shading.

I like the craft, the details, the depth and the brutality on those drawings. Just happy to see this, thank you for sharing the work of this artist.

Yes, he's a great artist.

Well, you mean that Palle Nielsen made some good works? If so I agree. But sadly this just sounds like a generic spam-comment.
