Charli XCX: Marina & the Diamonds Twitter feud

Charli XCX has responded to an apparent social media dig from fellow recording artist and former collaborator Marina Diamandis (also known as Marina & the Diamonds).

Diamandis posted a tweet on Thursday that seemed to indicate her frustrations with the “Boom Clap” singer, who posed for a series of photographs which bear resemblance to the cover art for Diamandis’ single, “Immortal.” More photos from the set, shot by Charlotte Rutherford (who also photographed the “Immortal” cover art), appear to share the same tropical aesthetic built around Diamandis’ 2015 album, FROOT, and its accompanying tour.

Diamandis reportedly commented on the now-deleted post on Rutherford’s Instagram, writing “That FROOT looks familiar!”

XCX responded to the incident on Instagram with a lengthy rebuttal to the supposed subtweet, noting that the shoot was for a fragrance brand that called for fruit-based imagery to reflect the lemon-scented product.

“You know what, sometimes you do a photoshoot standing in front of a plant, sometimes you do a photoshoot in black and white, sometimes you wear purple eyeshadow. Sometimes you shoot with the same photographer a fellow artist has shot with. That’s just how things happen in the industry I work in,” XCX wrote. “What was I supposed to do? Shoot it in the snow!?”

Charli XCX, who recently launched her very own record label, Vroom Vroom Recordings, ahead of dropping a four-track EP in February, previously opened for Diamandis on the third leg of her Lonely Hearts Club tour across North America in 2013. The singers also collaborated on a promotional song ahead of the tour, titled “Just Desserts,” which you can hear below.
