A decrepit bus made famous by Into The Wild has finally been removed from the Alaskan wilderness after multiple hikers died trying to see it. The bus, which became a tourist destination from the 2007 film and the Jon Krakauer book that it’s based on, was airlifted from Denali National Park by the Alaska Army National Guard yesterday (June 18).

Fairbanks Bus 142, which belonged to Christoper McCandless, was finally taken out of the park due to safety concerns, TMZ reports. Because of its remote location and dangerous rivers surrounding the site, most people who try and find the bus are caught in the unexpected conditions of the Alaskan wilderness and risk their lives on the journey.

In 2019, a woman from Belarus died trying to hike to the bus, and earlier this year, a group of five tourists from Italy had to be rescued while trying to find the “Magic Bus.”

Local officials have long called for the bus to be removed, and the Alaska Natural Resources Commissioner says a new, permanent location for Fairbanks Bus 142 is currently being discussed.

Into the Wild chronicles the true story of McCandless, who chose to leave his material possessions behind and travel to the remote wilderness after he graduated from Emory University. He never revealed to friends or family where he was headed, but he hitchhiked his way to Alaska and eventually discovered the abandoned bus after being dropped at the Stampede Trail.

McCandless lived in the bus for months, but when he was ready to return to civilization, he was trapped by the Teklanika River, which had risen and was impossible to cross. Stranded with little sustenance, he died in the bus at the age of 24 in 1992.

Krakauer’s 1996 book “Into The Wild” first popularized McCandless’ story and inspired readers to search for the bus to see it with their own eyes. Over a decade after Krakauer’s book was published, the movie adaptation starring Emile Hirsch as McCandless spread his story to wider audiences, keeping the allure of the bus alive.
