Immerse yourself in one of Denmark’s most beautiful churches –and visit both the tower and the crypt when Open House opens the doors to the tranquility and beauty of Grundtvig’s Church.

Grundtvig’s Church is modest yet ostentatious. Its design was inspired by the village churches of the Middle Ages, the Gothic style and the enormous cathedrals of Europe. Only here, there is no extra ornamentation, no finery. Everything is shaped by pale brick which, in combination with the natural light and the purpose-designed chairs, creates a distinctive simplicity –pure Nordic minimalism on a scale you won’t find anywhere else.

Built with Care

The church was erected as a memorial for the renowned Danish author, theologian and founder of the Danishfolk high school movement, N.F.S. Grundtvig, and took 19 years to build. Everything was made by hand, and every detail inspected, first by architect P.V. Jensen-Klint, who designed the church, and then by his son, Kaare Klint, who took over the work of completing the church after his father’s death in 1930.

See the Crypt and the Chapel

Grundtvig’s Church is opening its doors from basement to tower. Climb up the tower to see the impressive wooden construction and admire the view of the city. The attic is full of effects from when the church was being built and past proposals for memorials for N.F.S. Grundtvig. You can also take a look inside the beautiful crypt and the underground chapel. The church interior will be filled with music and there will be stories about the history of the church.

The church, tower, crypt and chapel are open 1-5 pm.
