Focus on Danish Contemporary Art

Allan Otte, Eske Kath, Danh Vo, Jesper Christiansen and Tal R – a large selection of Danish contemporary art will be up for auction in September in Bredgade.

When the doors open to the autumn’s international auction in Bredgade we present some of the biggest names on the Danish art scene.

A Crashed Tractor

Among the highlights is the piece "To" (Two) from 2006 by Allan Otte (b. 1978), whose paintings often move between accidents and the subsequent clean up. In this instance Otte depicts a crashed tractor, and the painting meets the viewer with the artist’s distinctive and provocative interplay between sharpness and blurriness.

Natural Disasters in Art

Eske Kath (b. 1975) is more concerned with explosions, fires, volcanic eruptions and other natural disasters in a highly colour saturated universe - a universe that almost blows the viewer away in the encounter with the work. At the auction the painting "Disintegration-Volcano", which Kath painted in 2003, will be up for sale. He has for a long time gained attention on the art scene and has among other projects decorated one of the ceilings in Frederik 8's palace at Amalienborg.

Personal History

Included in the auction is also the Vietnamese-born artist Danh Vo (b. 1975), who likes to embed his personal history in relation to world history in his work. ”Det bliver aldrig det samme” (It will never be the same) from 2000-01 belongs to the artist's earliest work from his time at the Royal Academy of the Fine Arts in Copenhagen, before he moved in a more conceptual direction.

Coloured Surfaces with Words

Jesper Christiansen (b. 1955) is known for his deserted motifs and large formats, and at this auction a painting measuring 241 X 254 cm from 2001 will be up for sale. It belongs to the artist's series of ”Klyngemalerier” (Cluster Paintings), which is a further development of the ”Bogstavmalerier” (Letter Paintings) from the 1990s. In the painting the square and coloured surfaces are covered with a plethora of words that unite painting and poetry as art forms.

Movement and Fragments

Tal R is also an important name within Danish contemporary art, and with his playful and humorous paintings in strong colours he has for many years managed to seduce a large audience of art connoisseurs both in Denmark and abroad. Included at the auction is the intense painting "2000 Monky" from 1999, which places all the methods of artistic painting in movement and breaks them into fragments along the way.
