Ewok for a Echoes of Darkness

I created the Ewok and its accessories for a fanmade Star Wars film called Echoes of Darkness

Still renders:

Turntable renders

Workflow:

  • Blender for sculpting, modeling, some procedural texturing, grooming, rigging, animation, fur simulation, rendering.
  • Substance Painter for texturing.
  • HoudiniFX for cloth simulation.

I had to incorporate it into live-action footage so I tried to make it as realistic looking as I could.

Incredible work, especially with the fur. Looks great in the test footage as well. (Although- the sound is mono, it’s left channel only. Don’t know if that’s intentional?)

Thanks!

the fur was done with the old hair system (started the project a while ago) and using the turbulence force field helped me to achieve the specific look I was going for. Nowadays it can be done with geo nodes and noises  (which is a lot more practical because you don’t need to convert your particles to mesh to apply the force field deformations and then back to particles)

I also needed small clumps but because fractal clumping isn’t a thing yet I needed a bunch of parent hairs (If you look at the rig video I enable them at 0:19).

Oh yeah the sound being broken was just because it was a quick edit thrown together  When the project is finished (there is still some filming being done and it has to be edited and go trough compositing) I’ll change the video to the polished version

Super cool everything works really well, there is a lot of different craft here and nothing is dragging the result down. Even the animation feels really natural, is it all hand animated or you did something else ?

Congrats !

Thank you!
Yep it is all hand animated but the reference I recorded of my self doing the actions helped a lot! I also noticed that it is super import that your movement happens in nice spirals/curves.

Good job! Though, I have to say, the naked version of the Ewok in that rig video looks so cursed. The design is so unsettling without the fur covering it up. :skull:

Looks believable, real. Good Job !
