Alfred Kubin

Alfred Kubin (April 1877-August 1959) was an Austrian print-maker, illustrator and occasional writer.

Kubin can be considered to be an important representative of early Symbolism and Expressionism, his work is often easily identifiable due to the artists distinctive style.

Kubin's work was dark, spectral and full of symbolic fantasies which are then often assembled into a series of works and drawings to help create a sense of narrative within them.

However, between the period of 1902-1910 he made a small number of oil paintings before abandoning the medium completely and focusing mainly upon pen and ink drawings, watercolors and lithographs.

One thing that particularly strikes me about Kubin's work is the subtlety with which he created his drawings, watercolors and prints, the use of l

ighting within the pieces being used to slowly illuminate the scene as the viewer explores the image.

Overall, I think it's this use of subtlety that I'd like to explore within my own work, though, perhaps on a future project to scale back the size that I've been working on.
