At times the fish simply thumbed its nose at Woody a efforts and ripped off a dozen feet of line from the tightly set drag. At other times it seemed to give grudgingly to 20 feet of line then Back Down to. Finally its struggles subsided to occasional yanks As Woody gained ground. Ten minutes after the Battle began one of the mates on the gemini Queen Gaffer the Black grouper and brought it aboard. As of wednesday morning Woody a 29.29-Pound grouper held the third week Lead in the charter boat grouper category of the Panama City Beach fishing classic. Woody who Only began grouper fishing about three months ago goes out about every two weeks now on the gemini Queen which does 12-hour trips out of Andersons Marina in Panama City Beach. He has already caught a 52-Pound a Copper belly grouper but he landed it a couple of weeks before the classic began. A about three months ago a neighbor invited me out grouper fishing a said Woody. A i caught two groupers and i just got by far the most common grouper caught by anglers aboard the party boats is the gag grouper called Black grouper along much of the Gulf coast. Many of the fish when they reach 40 pounds or More take on a Copper Sheen along their flanks and bellies hence the name a Copper there Are at least three species of grouper commonly called Black grouper but the most common is the gag grouper found from the Carolinas throughout the Gulf. It is easy to distinguish by the worm like patterns along its sides. They like hard Bottom wrecks tigers can be a ton of trouble Marty Klinkenberg Knight Ridder wire key West Kenny Harris is dangling a lifeless Barracuda from a rope tied to the Bow of his boat. The 27-foot vessel is surrounded by Sharks As its Anchor tugs against the current in the Gulf of Mexico near the Marquesas keys. Every few minutes the key West fishing Captain snatches the Barracuda away from 8-foot nurse Sharks. Although they appear formidable Harris has no interest in them. Nurse Sharks Are sluggish and provide Little sport. Harris is leaving a scent for More combative Sharks especially tigers. Forget jaws. Great White Sharks Are As common in South Florida As icebergs. The Tiger shark is its subtropical equivalent Little celebrated but no less forbidding. A other Sharks Are scarier looking and May bite you a Harris says. A but the tigers will bite you. I am More afraid to be in the water with them than any shark i have seen. A it has a deserved reputation As a Man eater a Blac tips bulls hammerheads and Lemons Are the Sharks most commonly please see Sharks / 8c Oil rigs Rocky outcrops and isolated Patch reefs much the same areas that Harbor populations of red snapper. One of the bonuses of grouper fishing is an occasional 20 to 30-Pound red snapper. Capt. David Barfield skipper of the gemini Queen has fished and watched grouper anglers Over More than 20 years in the business. He has been on a boat when a 300-Pound Warsaw grouper came aboard and on Days when the most experienced grouper Angler buy a strike. Unlike other kinds of fishing there is very Little finesse involved in catching grouper an Angler needs Good equipment Strong arms and Back patience an ill defined level of experience and Luck. A skill is important but there is a lot of Luck involved too a said Barfield. Larry Hobbs first mate on another charter boat and an experienced grouper Angler fished All Day but zeroed out. A Larry is a Good Fisherman a said Barfield. A today they caught outdoors beat them All around him and he did no to catch Woody caught three groupers and missed three others fishing with live berliners. Other experienced grouper anglers on the boat were using live coffers often the bait of Choice for groupers but none was As successful As Woody. A normally coffers Are Dandy grouper bait a Barfield said. A yesterday the groupers were caught on dead berliners and grunts. I had people fishing with live bait and they did no to get a thing. A a in be seen the time people fishing with Small pieces of squid caught them a he said. Woody uses 60-Pound test monofilament on the Rod and a sliding 12 to 14-ounce sinker. He tips the 60-Pound, eight foot Leader with a 7/0hook. Like Many other grouper anglers he has found a Way to keep his bait alive. Some bring elaborate aerated containers aboard. Woody uses a five gallon plastic bucket and continually adds water either from a Hose that brings Salt water aboard for cleaning purposes or by dipping up sea water with a smaller bucket. Many anglers use a Bottom weighted Rig but Woody prefers please see Woody / 8c local anglers May Benefit from Andrew hurricanes Are awesome storms that can do extreme damage. While we received almost no physical effects of Hurricane Andrew in Panama City the tourist business suffered. Even though we merely received a Little rain i heard that some charter boat captains got phone Calls from potential customers wanting to know if there was anything left of the Marina where their boats were located. It seems that any bad news in Florida is perceived to be statewide. Hurricanes can do much physical damage when they come ashore at a certain location. Besides Messing up marinas motels roads and so Forth they can alter Bay and Gulf Bottoms and Barrier islands. Anyone who has fished the area of the old pass at the East end of Shell Island Over a period of a number of years can to help but to notice the extreme differences Down there. The Channel what there is left of it has moved hundreds of Yards and is still changing. Often a Hurricane will completely Bury some wrecks reefs or rocks in the Sand. And the stirred up water can make fishing non productive for a Short period of time. There Are some positive effects of hurricanes. It is my understanding that the East pass at Destin is the result of a very High tide filling the Bay with a lot of water and a Man with a shovel digging a Trench to let some of it out. The flow of water Rushing through the ditch he dug washed out a new pass which made for a Shorter route to the Gulf for boats in that end of the Bay. New wrecks and Rock piles Are Captai blood by Mike Ware often uncovered As a result of a Hurricane. After the Hurricane that hit Cedar key a few years Back i located a Rock pile off Shell Island that i had never heard of before. I caught a Bunch of fish there Over a period of a few months before a Small storm reburied the rocks. Who knows maybe another storm will uncover them again and those Loran numbers will once again mean something. Hurricanes also tend to move Large amounts of fish to different areas. You May Stop at a spot that was Only Good for a few fish each time you visited it Only to discover the place is now loaded with tons of hungry fish. Its generally believed that a Hurricane that comes up the Florida Gulf coast pushes Black grouper into the Panhandle area while one that goes into Louisiana or Texas brings us Large amounts of red snapper. Could a Hurricane that travelled a path such As Andrewes do both Only time will Tell but ill bet Well see very Good fishing very soon As the Gulf settles Down and clears up a Little. In be already heard a few reports of some snapper catches from reefs that held few fish prior to the latest Hurricane. Snapper fishing May Well be exceptional this fall. Hurricanes May bring snappers into the area but they Are usually caught from Normal traditional a snapper groupers Are a different Story. They can show up any place after a big blow. You can All of a sudden have anglers catching grouper limits from Gulf piers jetties passes and from around just about any Structure in the lower Bays. Other species of fish May show up in big numbers too. Some May be fish we normally catch or used to years ago when they were More plentiful while others May be More exotic tropical species. Two that come to mind Are red Mouth grunts which were numerous decades ago but on the decline until a Hurricane brought us a bumper crop and a Bunch of Breed Stock and the Rainbow runner. The latter is a South Florida resident and a member of the Jack family. Normally we done to see them but after a Hurricane a while Back a few were landed by quite a number of boats. But that was a Short lived experience. Hopefully we will find that for All the bad things Hurricane Andrew did perhaps it has done some Good things too.
